Today, the students of Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) attended sensitization workshop for deepening democracy through tree planting. The workshop was organized by the Citizen’s Coalition for Electoral Democracy in Uganda (CCEDU) in collaboration with the Islamic University in Uganda.
The sensitization workshop was aimed at creating a platform that deconstructs bad governance practices and deepens the understanding of the citizenry on the need for progressive elections and good governance practices.
The Resident City Commissioner (RCC) of Mbale City, Mr Ahmada Washaki who is also a student of the Islamic University in Uganda flagged off the activity by planting a tree. Mr Washaki asked the students to take part in planting trees exercise to conserve the environment.
The IUIU Vice Rector In-Charge of Academic Affairs Dr Jamil Serwanga also attended the workshop. In his remarks, Dr Serwanga said IUIU is committed to continue working with Government in conserving the environment.
The Vice Rector said IUIU offers a Bachelor of Science in Environment Science at Degree and Masters level that prepares students to be expert in conserving the environment.
The tree planting drive is aimed at engaging the communities on the best ways to work together with the Government to promote democracy , human rights, and fulfilling Government programs. The campaign fulfils Government’s NDP III program and the National Agenda on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as well as Vision 2030 priorities towards rejuvenating of the environment and improving community participation towards environmental protection.
