Over the years, students in highschool have dreamed of the word “University“, which they refer to as campus. Most of them fancy the freedom, nightlife and a gang of friends that higher institutions give.
They used to boast of phrases like lectures, lecturers, lecture rooms, courseunites and coursework not being called lessons, teachers, class rooms, subjects and homework respectively.
The Advent of the pandemic overturned everything. Now that they are at home, they can nolonger boast of such. The don’t hang around with friends and can not have the freedom they so badly crave for.
Mubiru Hamza, a student at the Islamic University In Uganda(IUIU) Kampala campus told The Lens Media that he doesn’t enjoy lectures since he can not converse with his coursemates during the course of the lectures.
“Waaa! Now lectures are boring naawe! I can’t even jazz with some of my friends in lectures. At times the lecturer goes before I understand a topic and it is my friends that have understood. After the lectures, my friends, who would have explained get offline and I have no credit to call them for explanations…,”he said.
Another student, Fauzia, claimed that if online learning is here forever, students will not have connections after campus.
“This online thing has to stop when the pandemic goes because those days, I hear our elder brothers and sisters were connected to the jobs they have now, by the very people they went with at school. Now we study with classmates that we even do not know. If the graduation happens online, it means that you will never meet the people you studied with. How then are we going to help one another in future?,”she said.
Another student, who didn’t wish his name to be mentioned told The Lens that he misses the times when he and his company went for outings to refresh their brains.
We are yet to talk to several lecturers to find out how they think online learning has changed school life.
