Over the years, Muslims have lacked institutions that are Islamic based. The ones present focused only on Islamic theology and teaching, neglecting the science and technology part.
The Islamic foundation had not yet found ground academically. It was only in 1988 when an Islamic learning center called The Islamic University In Uganda (IUIU) was established.
More institutions including primary and secondary Schools were established.
Several other institutions were made up in order to teach Islamic studies and theology.
At the Advent of technology, schools of science and technology were established and more more Muslims became academically enlightened.
Most of these developmental projects done in the education sector were and have been funded by an International Islamic based organization called The Organization Of Islamic Cooporation(OIC)
The OIC has had impacts on IUIU both scientifically and technologically. Using it’s financial muscle, it has managed to start up an Engineering faculty which is underway. This has been confirmed by Dr. Iyad Ameen Medani, the secretary general of the OIC.
“The world body, through its Islamic Development Bank(IDB),has already approved $13million equalling to36billion for the establishment of the faculty of engineering and technology at Islamic University In Uganda,” Dr. Iyad told a news outlet a few months ago.
Dr.Ahmed Kaweesa sengendo, the former Rector of IUIU envisioned the construction of the Advanced Library at the main campus located in Mbale, the installation of an Information and Communication Technology (ICT)facilities video conferencing that would bring the four campuses of IUIU together during the lectures and most of them have come to pass.
Themain library was established at the main campus, the students now study online though the joint lectures have not yet started.
The organization of Islamic Cooperation is an international body founded in 1969. It consists of 57 member States like The Republic of Uganda,The Islamic Republic of Afghanistan,to mention but a few.It was created with the aim of creating unity and development within the member states.
