Myths like vaccines are the white man’s way of trying to control the population and the people who took it would die in 2 years are still spreading through different chat groups like wild fire. Many politicians also joined the chorus, spreading illogical claims that Africans are gullible to trust the white man’s vaccine for corona virus.
This misinformation had steadily increased vaccine hesitancy among the population until the outbreak of the first cases of omicron covid variant in Uganda which was detected in 7 travellers from South Africa and Nigeria who arrived at Entebbe International Airport on 29 November, 2021.
“Gradually the misinformation about the available vaccine started to diminish.” Said Dr. Alfred Driwale manager for Uganda National Expanded Program on Immunisation. According to the ministry of healthy, the number of covid-19 vaccination doses administered per 100 people in Uganda rose to 21 as of 21st December 2021.
“More people are now willing to take a jab”. Driwale adds. The government of Uganda instituted mandatory vaccination of frontline workers and this has also increased numbers of vaccinated ugandans.
