The Rector of the Islamic University In Uganda(IUIU) Prof. Dr. Ismail Simbwa Gyagenda has today 1st January 2021 made one full year while serving as the Newly appointed Rector of IUIU.
Prof. Gyagenda assumed office as the new Rector in January 2021. He took over from Dr. Ahmad Kawesa Sengendo who served as Rector from 2004 to 2020.
Prof. Ismail Simbwa Gyagenda was born on June 16, 1956, in Itendero, Sheema District (formerly a County of Ankole District). He attended Kabwohe Muslim Primary School 1962-69, Mbarara High School 1970-73, and St. Mary’s College, Kisubi 1974-75.
At the inception of IUIU in 1988, the current IUIU Rector was also among the pioneers and he severed as the first Male warden.
On February 10, 2016, he returned from the USA to IUIU as Vice-Rector in charge of Academic Affairs and he served for five years.

The Islamic University in Uganda was opened in the year 1988 by the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) under a bilateral agreement between the Government of Uganda (GOU) and the OIC. In 1990, the Parliament of Uganda enacted a law, The Islamic University in Uganda Act (cap 131, Laws of Uganda), formally establishing the University in Uganda.
The University operates under the framework of this Act. The University opened on 10th February 1988 with 80 students and two-degree programs. Currently, it offers 72 programs in 7 Faculties and has a student population of 8,638 coming from 21 different countries. The University has so far graduated 25,000 students from various disciplines.
Currently, IUIU has a center for Postgraduate Studies and four campuses which include IUIU Main Campus Mbale, Kibuli Campus, Kabojja Female’s Campus, and Arua Campus The University employs over 600 full-time members of staff from 8 countries, and about 300 on a part time basis.
