Fires are becoming a concern after two schools were burned a few days ago. In Kyotera district, a school called St John’s Primary School was burnt down and one pupil is reported to have died instantly.
In Kampala, New Crest Junior at Kibedi Day and Boarding Primary School in Kawempe Division lost four pupils after fire gutted the school dormitory in Saturday.
Kampala metropolitan deputy police spokesperson, Mr Luke Owoyesigyire confirmed the fires on Saturday, and said that four lives were lost.
“It is alleged that the fire started at around 3am (15/01/2022) from one of the female pupils’ dormitories. Four female pupils have been confirmed dead while three are seriously hurt. The injured were evacuated to Kyadondo Hospital located in Kisowera Zone Kawempe I Ward in Kawempe Division,” he said.
The cause of the fires is not yet clear. It unpeels the wound of the fires that burnt down several schools in 2018 where fire gutted a dormitory at Greenhill Primary School in Bukomansimbi District and 11 students died.
In the same year, fire gutted a dormitory at Bishop Ddungu Primary School in Lwengo District. Similar incidents happened in 2015 and 2011.
