The Federation International of Football Association ( FIFA) has ordered Russia to play the rest of their upcoming games in a neutral territory under the name ” The Football Union of Russia” without their National Flag and Anthem following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Nations like England, Wales, Poland, Czech Republic and Sweden have already announced that they will refuse to play Russia.
Russia is supposed to face Poland before facing either the Czech Republic or Sweden if they win during the upcoming 2022 World Cup play offs which are slated to take place in March .
The Swedish Football Association President, Karl-Erik Nilson says they are not satisfied with FIFA’s decision. “Our opinion is not different today and the situation has not changed in Ukraine because we have received a message from FIFA. So we have no other opinion today. But we also want to talk to Poland and the Czech Republic so that we can give back to FIFA what we think, but we had expected a sharper stance from FIFA”, he told the press.
FIFA however says talks with other sporting organizations are to continuously be held so as to determine any additional measures or sanctions including potential exclusion of Russia from the competitors which shall be applied in the nearby future if at all the situation between Russia and Ukraine does not improve rapidly.
