Yesterday, Chelsea’s hopes to go further in the Champions League were buried by a 1-3 defeat to Spanish giants Real Madrid at Stamford Bridge.
Karim Benzema rose to a hat-trick scoring in the 21st, 24th, and 46th minutes and Chelsea were left speechless with a goal by Havertz in the 40th minute.
Chelsea is last year’s Champions and if they are eliminated, a new Champion will reign in Europe.
Bayan Munich could not turn an early lead from Spanish club Villarreal. Arnaut Danjuma’s early strike in the 8th minute was the only difference despite fruitless efforts by Bayan to tear the Villarreal backline. At the Estadio De La Ceramica, the Spanish crowd kept Unai Emery’s team in solidarity till the last whistle.
In other matches that had been played last Tuesday, Liverpool hammered Benfica with a 1-3 win through Konate, Sadio Mane, and Diaz. Benfica’s only goal was scored by Nunez.
Manchester City also beat Athletico De Madrid 1-0 through a strike from Kevin De Bryne. This was another intense match that saw City struggle to put the ball behind the net.
Champions League continues next week with the second leg as Chelsea visits Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, Bayan seeks revenge against Villarreal, Benfica seeks a miracle return from Anfield and Atletico seeks to overturn the 1-0 deficit.
