The National Unity Platform (NUP) has called for applications for the Omoro County by-election following the Electoral Commission’s announcement that the county’s by-election would be held on 26th May 2022.
In a letter dated 20th April 2022, NUP’s Election Management committee, urged members that are interested and qualified to take on the seat to apply as soon as possible. These are expected to submit their applications letters before noon, today 22nd , April 2022.
The Omoro County Constituency Parliamentary seat fell vacant following the death of the former Member of Parliament and former Speaker of Parliament, Jacob Oulanyah.Oulanya was Omoro county’s MP in the 2001-2005 term and from 2011 till his death.
The National Resistance Movement (NRM) has already endorsed Andrew Ojok Oulanyah, the son of the late as flag bearer for the seat ahead of the by-elections. According to the head of state ,president Museveni who is also the party chairman, this is a sign of respect for the deceased and his family.
Section 3(1) article stipulates that whenever an Mp dies or where the seat of an Mp becomes vacant under article 83 of the constitution, or where the seat of the member becomes vacant under section 4, the clerk of parliament shall notify the commission within 10 days after the vacancy has occurred and a by-election shall subject to section 95, be held within 60 days after the vacancy has occurred.
