The acting National Coordinator for Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) , Alice Alaso, has urged the nation not to consider Press Freedom Day as a mere ritual, adding that journalists must be assured of safety while on duty.
She made the remarks as journalists both in Uganda and across the world celebrated International Press Freedom Day.
May 3 of every year is celebrated to cheer up and recognise the great role played by media in the society.
This year’s theme is dubbed “Journalism under digital siege,”
In a statement,Alaso said the nation should look up for accountability for the excesses meted on journalists in Uganda.
“The media, press men and women must be assured of safety of life and tools.Today we are reminded of kanwenza and Norman Tumuhimbise and other personalities at work but harassed for conveying a view to the public,”said Alaso.
She further urged the media to act with courage diligence and integrity especially given the ever increasing high handed ness of the situation at hand.
“On this day we commend the media for bringing information to the public domain which is an important tenet in democracy and governance,”she said.
