At least two people have been burnt and died on spot while others sustained serious injuries when a government ambulance attached to Bwera hospital caught fire while in transit at Kibiito.
Health teams were transferring a referred patient from Bwera general hospital to Fort Portal Regional Referral Hospital.
According to our sources those who died on spot include Asaba Robert and Peter Baluku.
Those that sustained injuries are; Kabarisa Jane, Zamari Masereka, Bagaya Garvin and Donah Kabahuma
The fire is suspected to be caused by an oxygen cylinder which was in the ambulance serving a patient referred to Kirudu Hospital in Kampala from Kasese hospital.
The patient had been referred to the hospital because of Kidney related Complications.
The Ministry of Health confirmed the incident although didn’t indicate the people of people who died.
It said that their emergency care, saying that Fort Portal emergency response team reported that five people were on board at the time of the fire that started in the patient cabin.
The Ministry said three people were in the patients cabin (an emergency nurse, attendant and patient) and two in the front cabin (a driver and another l attendant).
“The emergency medical services department at the Ministry of Health has sent a team to evacuate the casualties who survived with severe burns to Kiruddu National Referral Hospital where there is a specialised burns unit to handle severe burns,” said the Ministry in a statement.
The Ministry said although the exact cause of the fire is not yet known, investigations will be conducted by experts to establish the cause.
“We shall update the public as further information becomes available. The Ministry of Health regrets the unfortunate incident and extends sympathy to the families that have lost their loved ones. We pray for the souls of the deceased to rest in eternal peace,” said the Ministry.
