The Traffic Police spokesperson Faridah Nampiima has said they registered a total of 104 road accidents during the end of year festival.
This was from December 30 2022 to January 1 2033.
The reported accidents were categorized as follows:28 accidents, people who lost their lives, 27 accidents, vehicles, motorcycles were damaged,49 accidents injured with a total of 149 people sustained serious injuries, 35 people dead.
Nampiima attributed the increased road crashes to careless driving, and over spreading among road users.
“We registered a total of 104 road accidents from 30th December 2022 to 1st January 2023, however the increasing number of accidents during the period are caused by careless driving, over speeding by road users and Kampala metropolitan registered the highest number of accidents with a total of 49 accidents,’’ Nampiima said.
Nampiima appealed to road users to respect the signs on the road across the country as this will help to decrease the increasing number of accidents which are claiming people’s lives.
‘’To all road users respect the signs on the roads, respect each other while driving and use our toll-free line to report any indiscipline on roads as this will help us overcome the increasing road accidents,’’ Nampima advised.
Some of the accidents which occurred the festive season are in the incident that took place at Hakabira on top of Rwahi hill in Rwahi town council in Ntungamo District which claimed the lives of six people when a Volcano Bus collided with another, bus of Oxygen bus company and another one accident along Kampala – Mityana road after a heavy goods truck rammed into cars and motorcycles.
